Improving efficiency of evolutionary structural optimization by implementing fixed grid mesh
نویسندگان
چکیده
Evolutionary structural optimization (ESO) has been shown through much published research to be a simple and yet effective method for structural shape and topology optimization. However, attention has been drawn to shortcomings in the method related to the computational efficiency of the algorithm as well as the jagged edge representation of the Finite Element optimal solutions. In this paper a fixed grid (FG) mesh is implemented and an improved ESOmethodology is introduced in order to address these shortcomings. The examples show a significant improvement in the solution time as well as eliminating the jagged edges and checkerboard patterns that may appear in current solution topologies. In addition, FG is applied to both stress based and stiffness optimization. This paper demonstrates a simple implementation of FG and the consequent improvement in the efficiency and practicality of the FG ESO formulation.

The Effects of Shape Parameterization on the Efficiency of Evolutionary Design Optimization for Viscous Transonic Airfoils
The effect of airfoil shape parameterization on optimum design and its influence on the convergence of the evolutionary optimization process is presented. Three popular airfoil parametric methods including PARSEC, Sobieczky and B-Spline (Bezier curve) are studied and their efficiency and results are compared with those of a new method. The new method takes into consideration the characteristics...
متن کاملTwo-Dimensional Fixed Grid Based Finite Element Structural Analysis
This paper introduces a new fixed mesh structural analysis technique based on isoparametric formulations from classic finite element analysis. Fixed mesh methods are popular in boundary based optimisation as they avoid mesh distortion problems and reanalysis is simple and efficient. The area ratio based fixed grid method is often employed due to its favourable simplicity in implementation. Howe...
متن کاملOPTIMAL CONSTRAINED DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES BY DIFFERENTIAL EVOLUTIONARY ALGORITHMS
Structural optimization, when approached by conventional (gradient based) minimization algorithms presents several difficulties, mainly related to computational aspects for the huge number of nonlinear analyses required, that regard both Objective Functions (OFs) and Constraints. Moreover, from the early '80s to today's, Evolutionary Algorithms have been successfully developed and applied as a ...
متن کاملGENERALIZED FLEXIBILITY-BASED MODEL UPDATING APPROACH VIA DEMOCRATIC PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHM FOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE PROGNOSIS
This paper presents a new model updating approach for structural damage localization and quantification. Based on the Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC), a new damage-sensitive cost function is introduced by employing the main diagonal and anti-diagonal members of the calculated Generalized Flexibility Matrix (GFM) for the monitored structure and its analytical model. Then, ...
متن کاملIS-PAES: A Constraint-Handling Technique Based on Multiobjective Optimization Concepts
This paper introduces a new constraint-handling method called InvertedShrinkable PAES (IS-PAES), which focuses the search effort of an evolutionary algorithm on specific areas of the feasible region by shrinking the constrained space of single-objective optimization problems. IS-PAES uses an adaptive grid as the original PAES (Pareto Archived Evolution Strategy). However, the adaptive grid of I...
